Getting to know you and your guests

For me, great wedding photography starts with people.

I take time to get to know you, to understand what matters to you and, just as importantly, to make you feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’m naturally quite easy-going, and I find that once we’ve had a chance to chat, most couples quickly forget they’re being photographed.

The same goes for your guests. I love getting amongst everyone, chatting, laughing and becoming part of the atmosphere rather than standing on the sidelines with a long lens.

That connection makes a real difference. People relax, they behave naturally, and that’s when the best photographs happen.

I’ve often been told by couples that their guests hardly noticed they were being photographed — or that it felt more like having a friend with a camera than having a photographer at their wedding. That’s exactly what I’m aiming for.

Candid moments, naturally captured

I’m constantly looking for the moments that happen without being planned.

Of course, I’ll photograph the big moments — the ceremony, confetti, speeches, first dance and all the things you’d expect. But I’m equally interested in what happens around them.

A glance between two friends. Your dad trying not to cry during the speeches. Your grandmother laughing with her grandchildren. Someone sneaking an extra glass of champagne. The quiet moment between you both when everything finally settles down.

These are the photographs that often become the ones you treasure most.

They can’t really be staged or recreated. They just happen. My job is to notice them, anticipate what might happen next and capture them without interrupting what’s going on.

A little direction when you need it

Although much of my photography is candid and documentary in style, I’m not going to leave you wondering what to do when it comes to photographs of the two of you.

I’ll give you gentle direction when it’s helpful, particularly for your couple portraits, but I won’t turn you into models or spend ages posing you.

I want you to look and feel like yourselves.

We might take ten or fifteen minutes to step away from everything, have a wander, catch your breath and spend a little time together. I’ll use the surroundings and the available light to create some beautiful portraits, while keeping everything relaxed and natural.

And then we’ll get back to the party.

Your wedding, your way

Every wedding is different, and I don’t arrive with a rigid list of photographs that I need to recreate. Instead, I respond to what’s happening in front of me.

I’m watching, moving, anticipating and looking for the moments that tell the story of your particular day. Sometimes that means being right in the middle of the action; sometimes it means quietly stepping back and watching what unfolds.

I want your photographs to reflect how your wedding actually felt — not a version of it that has been heavily posed or staged.

Ultimately, I want you to look through your photographs years from now and be transported straight back to the day.
